New Improvements to the Sprint Course Loop

Under the direction of Larry Krar & the late Scott Elliot we have made some major improvements to the sprint course that was built last year in the stadium.  Existing berms were expanded and a new berm was created at the North end of the stadium.  Two laps of the course will equal the Olympic standard of 1.2km.  Look for some sprint races to be staged throughout the season to make use of this exciting new development.

Kids Play Area Improvements

While we had the machines up building up the sprint loop we also had them spend some time in the newly developed kids play area from last season.  The area has been expanded and new berms and hills have been added to make this even more of a draw for the kids enrolled in Bunny/Rabbit/Track Attack programs.

New Snowshoe Trails!

Larry Krar has been diligently cutting new trails over the summer and we now have over  25km of Snowshoe Trails

BC Midget Championships

The 2007 B.C. Midget Championships, held Feb. 3rd & 4th at Telemark, is now in the history books! A very successful event that attracted over 125 participants plus their entourage from across B.C., this was a great opportunity to show off our trails, our newly updated stadium and the efforts of our volunteer contingent. All of which attracted very positive comments from the coaches, parents, and competitors at the event!

Our volunteers were awesome! From parking lot to trails, stadium, food, bibb pickup and strippers, start line, finish line, timing, banquet, course marshalling, judging and more... - all of you (over 60 members) did a fantastic job!! Not only did many hands make it easy for all, it gave everyone a chance to see these mighty midgets race, and race they did! Congrats to our Telemark team who wound up in 2nd place against a huge contingent from Hollyburn that just barely snuck away with the trophy. But what an experience! Coach Murray and the racers are now thoroughly pumped for the rest of the ski season.

School's In!

Last year the Telemark School Ski program delivered fun, excitement, and an introduction to X-C skiing to over 1,500 school children in our community. This year, we want to do it again and BETTER!

We need you to consider volunteering a little time to the project. You don't need to be an "ace" skier. Any adult can do it. Our instructors last year included retired folks, moms with kids at school, and even people up on their day off to do it because it was such a rewarding experience.

THIS YEAR HERE'S THE BENEFIT PACKAGE!
* Commit to 1 session a week for the season and receive a Telemark "School Ski" vest.
* Receive 3 free ski lessons with the clubs' new coach Murray Farbridge.
* Receive a free CCBC coaching seminar "Introduction to Community Coaching" November 3 (evening) and 4th at Telemark.
* Receive a $15 "gas money bonus" for each session you coach.
* Have a fun and rewarding experience!

Telemark Receives Funding Grant

The Ogopogo Rotary Club of Kelowna has informed the Telemark Executive that it will be donating approximately $20,000 to Telemark to be used for upgrading of the stadium. This work consists of the construction of a new shed for the groomer, upgrading of lights and the reconfiguration of the stadium to better accommodate races and coaching sessions. It will be carried out this summer. An additional grant for this project of $17,000 was earlier awarded to Telemark by the Spirit of 2010 Olympic Paralympic Live Sites.

Membership Fee Increase

The Membership Fee has been increased for the upcoming season. For example, the early registration adult membership fee has been increased from $90 to $100. This fee increase was made necessary by the increase of membership contributions to Cross Country BC

Regional and Club Coach

Murray Farbridge has been hired as a combination Regional Coach for the Okanagan region and Club Coach for Telemark. Murray will spend the majority of his time with the Telemark athletes, but has a few regional duties as well. For the last 3 years Murray was the head coach at the Nickel Plate Cross Country Ski Club. He has great qualifications and will be an immense asset to our Club.

Stadium Improvements

During the summer the new groomer shed was constructed. New lights were installed in the stadium and the stadium was upgraded to allow for better sprint races. The new stadium will also be better suited for school program lessons and for the training of Ski League athletes.

Mountain Pine Beetle

A significant infestation of the mountain pine beetle was discovered this Spring and logging is underway to eliminate as many affected trees as possible in an attempt to slow down the infestation. In a way we are fortunate at Telemark that there is a mixed forest with pine, spruce and fir trees and as such, the damage caused by the pine beetle will not be as obvious.
